ABOUT US

We mobilize the church to serve alongside community partners to address the homelessness crisis in Pierce County.

What is the 937 Project?

In Matthew 9:36-38 we see Jesus having compassion on the crowds of people He is serving. He makes a profound comment about the amount of opportunity there is to share the gospel and Gods kingdom. He relates this to a field ready to be harvested without laborers. He then tells His disciples to pray that God will send laborers into His harvest.

The 937 Project’s focus is to connect the laborers (Christians from local churches in Pierce County) to a section of harvest that currently has high needs within our community (organizations serving homeless). A non-profit under Christian Associate Network, 937s hope is to create simple opportunities for churches in the Pierce County area to connect their members to organizations looking for help and volunteers. In addition, to help educate the Christian community on the efforts taking place on the ground in the fight to address the homeless crisis.

Why do we exist?

Over the last few years, we have seen the homeless crisis increase in Pierce County as well as all over the country. COVID-19 has only furthered the divide with economic and mental effects delaying and in some cases eliminating services as a whole. For many years the church (Local Pierce County Churches) has asked the question “what can we do to help?” Some responses have led to some amazing one-off projects such as bringing pizza to encampments, passing out water bottles, bringing jackets and clothes, providing free haircut services and more. Although these efforts are applauded and should continue, the challenge to this has many questioning if they are doing is enough to combat homelessness or are yearning to do more but don’t knowing where to start. Because of this, some of the one-off acts of kindness have started to lose their drive resulting in “service paralysis”. (Services paralysis is the state of wanting to serve but remaining stagnant due to lack of knowledge, or vision of impact). For example, many have felt moved to give money to individuals holding up street signs on the corner of an intersection but commonly question if the money will actually provide aid in their situation. While feeling conflicted, they lose the opportunity to truly serve with an open heart. To combat this, 937 is looking to connect those with hearts to serve to get involved with simple on ramping opportunities with agencies that have the expertise, commitment, plan, proven ability, and track record to provide significant aid to ending homelessness and move individuals to self sufficiency. Imagine the impact on our community when Christians mobilize to serve and love together in unity. In John 13:35 Jesus said this is how the world will know that we are disciples. 937 is not looking to reinvent the wheel of serving the homeless but connecting others to become spokes in the wheels already created.

The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’
